SIP Trunking

Dalcon currently offers Session Initiated Protocol (SIP) Trunking as a way for companies to lower their telephony expenses.

What is Session Initiated Protocol (SIP) Trunking?

Simply put, Session Initiated Protocol (SIP) Trunking is a way to relay voice data from an organization’s IP-PBX out to the rest of the world—much like the old telephone PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network). The difference between SIP Trunking and PSTN is that SIP relays information over the Internet, while PSTN relays information over plain old telephone lines (POTS or T1 and PRI).

Phone calls that are made via SIP Trunking are not limited to only other SIP Trunking phone systems. Even though SIP Trunking phone systems send voice data over the Internet, that data can be (and is) easily transferred to the PSTN. Therefore, SIP Trunking systems can make calls to both “Traditional” phone systems as well as Internet phone systems.

What Are the Benefits Associated With SIP Trunking?

SIP Trunking seems rather complex at first, but at its core it is just another way for organizations to lower their communications expenses. SIP Trunking helps organizations lower costs in the following ways:

  1. VoIP systems that rely on SIP Trunking use less equipment than standard VoIP systems. Therefore, companies that want to switch to VoIP from traditional phone systems can do so for less. Savings are approximately a minimum of $2000 and go upwards of $6,000 per IP-PBX.
  2. Each traditional PSTN Voiceline costs between $30-65 per month. Each SIP Trunk Voiceline costs $15-25 per month.
  3. Because SIP Trunking uses the Internet to relay calls instead of the old PSTN network, long distance phone call costs per minute are a fraction of the “traditional” price. This is especially true if the phone systems on both ends use SIP Trunking.

Although all of these expense savings are attractive, the cost savings explained in point 1 are especially important to businesses that are interested in switching to VoIP. Presently VoIP systems tend to have a higher installation cost than older TDM phone systems, and often this higher price is the only obstacle stopping many companies from making the switch to VoIP. However, installing a VoIP system with SIP Trunking costs significantly less than installing a VoIP system without SIP Trunking.  As a result, the savings provided by SIP Trunking bring the installation price of a VoIP phone system down to that of a traditional phone system.

SIP Trunking Bandwidth Usage

Because Voice data that is relayed using SIP Trunking is transmitted side by side with other data such as general web use, sufficient bandwidth is very important. Companies that decide to take advantage of the benefits provided by SIP Trunking should make sure that their data bandwidth is large enough to handle SIP Trunklines-as well as other data intensive activities like web browsing or downloading.
